Late payment dispute assistance: real lates vs. reporting errors

Late payments happen — but so do reporting mistakes. We help you tell the difference and, if a late payment was reported in error, prepare a documented dispute.

A late payment on your credit report can affect how lenders view your history. But there's an important distinction between a payment that was genuinely late and one that was reported late in error. Understanding that distinction is the first step in deciding whether a dispute makes sense.

When a late payment is reported accurately

If you missed a due date and didn't make the payment within the creditor's grace period, the late payment may be reported accurately. Accurate, current negative information isn't automatically removable simply because it's negative. Over time, the impact of an accurate late payment typically diminishes as you build a longer history of on-time payments.

When a late payment may be reported inaccurately

A late payment might appear even if you paid on time — for example, when a payment made before the due date posts late due to processing, when a creditor applies a payment to the wrong billing cycle, or when a payment arrangement wasn't reflected correctly. These are factual questions that your own records can help clarify.

Gathering your records

Collect your evidence: bank or payment app records showing when the payment was initiated, the creditor's payment confirmation, and the account statements for the relevant months. Comparing these against what's reported is the clearest way to determine whether a reporting error may have occurred.

Our dispute process

If your records indicate the late payment was reported in error, we help you prepare a dispute that's specific about the dates and includes copies (not originals) of your documentation. A factual, well-supported dispute is your strongest tool. If your records show the payment was genuinely late, we'll be honest with you about that rather than encouraging a baseless dispute.

What you can reasonably expect

If the furnisher confirms the late payment was reported in error, the credit reporting agency may correct or remove it. If the investigation confirms it was accurate, it generally remains — and that's not something any company can change by disputing it again.

What we cannot do

We can't remove an accurate late payment or guarantee a particular outcome. Paying the past-due amount brings the account current but doesn't automatically erase the late-payment history. We won't encourage you to dispute accurate information.
