Mortgage credit readiness: preparing before you apply

A mortgage is one of the largest credit decisions most people make. We help you prepare your credit responsibly — without ever promising approval.

Preparing your credit before applying for a mortgage helps you approach the process with realistic expectations and fewer surprises. We help you review your reports, understand what lenders typically consider, and build responsible habits — but we don't provide mortgage advice and can't promise approval or any particular rate.

Review your reports before applying

Request your reports from all three bureaus and review them carefully — ideally several months before you plan to apply, since investigations take time. Look for accounts you don't recognize, balances that seem wrong, and any information that may be inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated. Dispute genuine errors with the bureau that shows them.

Understand lender requirements

Mortgage lenders consider your credit history, debt levels, income, assets, and other factors. Requirements vary by loan type and lender, and a qualified mortgage professional can explain what applies to your situation. We don't advise on specific loan programs — that's the role of a licensed professional.

Manage your balances

Leading up to an application, focus on paying down revolving balances and keeping utilization relatively low. Lower balances can support a stronger overall picture, but we can't promise a specific score effect.

Avoid unnecessary new credit

Opening new accounts or taking on new loans shortly before a mortgage application can affect your credit and may raise questions with a lender. As a general practice, avoid new credit applications in the months leading up to a mortgage unless your lender advises otherwise.

Communicate with a qualified professional

If you're working with a lender or broker, ask what they recommend for your situation. They can explain how your profile looks to them and what, if anything, might strengthen your application. We encourage open communication with a licensed mortgage professional throughout.

What we cannot guarantee

We can't guarantee mortgage approval, any interest rate, or any specific score. We also don't recommend disputing accurate items simply to try to improve your profile before applying — only dispute genuine errors.
