A late payment on your credit report can affect how lenders view your credit history. But not every late payment that appears on a report is reported accurately — and understanding the difference between a genuine late payment and a reporting error is important.

There's an important distinction to make: if you genuinely missed a payment due date, that's a real event, and the creditor is generally entitled to report it. But if you made your payment on time and it's being reported as late — or if the late-payment status is inaccurate in some other way — you may have grounds to question it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a late payment that's actually accurate?

Generally, no. Accurate late-payment information may remain on your report for a period of years. Over time, its impact typically diminishes as you build a longer history of on-time payments.

What if the creditor made an error applying my payment?

If a payment was misapplied, contact the creditor directly to correct their records, and dispute the resulting late-payment mark with the credit reporting agencies using your payment documentation.

Does paying the late amount remove it from my report?

Paying the past-due amount brings the account current, but it doesn't automatically erase the history of the late payment. The late-payment notation may remain even after the balance is paid.
